We specialise in systems that provide full data sovereignty and are free from licensing costs and vendor lock-in - we do this through the power of open source and the freedom it gives for innovation.

With sister-companies in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, we’re a company that is recognised globally for our open source expertise, pushing the conventional technology boundaries and creating award-winning software solutions.

A career at Catalyst gives you the opportunity to work on high-profile projects, collaborate with industry experts, and continuously grow - personally and professionally. We’re on our own journey to align ourselves better with te ao Māori and our team is filled with open source enthusiasts who share our values of openness, freedom, collaboration and respect.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Network Engineer to join our team at Catalyst. You will work within a larger team of operations engineers, and be focused on building out and maintaining our internal and external networking infrastructure.

In addition to specific networking skills, you will be skilled at networking troubleshooting & diagnostics, critical thinking and comfortable working across a variety of tools and technologies.

You’ll work with BGP, OSPF, ERPS, VRRP and VXLAN using FRR and BIRD on Linux and OPNsense. Familiarity with network design, OA&M, AAA, nftables etc. as well as strong Linux and Proxmox skills are advantages.

We are an open source company, so we are not hiring people from a Microsoft, Oracle, or VMWare background. Our team is based across Aotearoa, so whether you want to work from home, from one of our offices, or a mix of both, we’re happy to find a flexible solution that works for you and your whānau.

About you

You’ll be someone who loves learning new things, enjoys working in a team, and can stay organised in a fast-paced, busy environment. The key skills we’re looking for are:

  • Hands-on experience operating Linux-based routers and firewalls.
  • Skills in troubleshooting issues across internal and external networks.
  • Experience in designing, building and maintaining secure network infrastructure.
  • Designing and configuring multi-region networks for high availability, scalability, and reliability.
  • Performance tuning and diagnostics at the OS and network level.
  • Familiarity with configuration management and version control.
  • Practical knowledge of firewalls, VPNs, and network security concepts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex multi-layer network issues and document solutions clearly.

You’ll be a flexible problem-solver with the ability to work well in a team. If you're looking for a role where you can continue growing and working with a great team, we’d love to hear from you! Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes; for the right candidate, we’ll provide training and on-the-job learning in a supportive team environment!
